Wu Bai ( Chinese  伍佰 , Pinyin Wǔ Bǎi , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Gō · -pah ); actually Wu Junlin ( Chinese  吳俊霖 , Pinyin Wú Jùnlín , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Ngô · Chùn-lîm ; born January 14, 1968 in the community Liujiao in the district of Chiayi , Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese rock singer and songwriter.

Career

Wu Bai was born in Suantou Village, Lujiao Township, Chiayi County, southern Taiwan. His real name is Wu Junlin. His father worked in a sugar factory, his mother as a betel nut seller. Wu Bai settled in Taipei in the late 1980s , where he earned a living doing odd jobs and taking his first steps as a musician. In 1991 he founded the band China Blue as a guitarist and singer . A year later he released his first album on the Japanese label Pony Canyon . The first foreign appearance took place in 1996 in Hong Kong . Since then, Wu Bai and China Blue have become a popular band in East Asia.

Wu Bai was with the labels Pony Canyon (1992), Magic Stone (1992-2001), Rock Records (1994-2002), Avex Taiwan (2003-2010) and Universal Music Taiwan (since 2011) under contract. In addition, he worked - mostly in supporting roles - in some feature films or wrote film music. In 2003 he married his partner and manager Chen Wen-pey.

stage name

The stage name “Wu Bai”, literally “five hundred”, is said to have originally been a nickname from the singer's childhood and arose from the fact that young Wu once achieved the maximum number of 100 points, a total of 500 points, in five exams in a row in high school .

Music genre

Wu Bai mainly produces rock music, but also soft pop, and writes the music and lyrics of most of his songs himself. He sings in both Taiwanese and Chinese . Outside of Taiwan, it is also popular in other East Asian countries, such as B. in China , Malaysia or Singapore .
