About this picture
Oberbillig with Sankta Maria I

Oberbillig is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate . She belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Konz .

location

Oberbillig, an old winegrowing, but formerly also fishing, boatman and railroader village on the Moselle , is located six kilometers west of Konz on the right bank of the Moselle at Moselle-Km 206 opposite the confluence of the Sauer . The federal highway 419 and the Upper Moselle line Trier - Perl - Metz run through the town by Deutsche Bahn , which has a stop here.

history

The community was first recorded as "Billich" in 965 AD. The origin is considered to be Celtic, but the name indicates Roman heritage, the Roman trading port Biliacum . Corresponding finds can be found today in the so-called Pieterhaus, which presents Stone Age evidence, Roman and geological finds from various excavations and other interesting aspects of Oberbillig's history. A larger settlement must have existed in Oberbillig as early as Roman times, because a 550-meter-long walled aqueduct, which was elaborately built in the second century AD, led into the old town center. This was fed by a stratified spring located southeast on the slope. The source is still called the Heidenborn today.

Historically, Oberbillig is closely linked to Wasserbillig in Luxembourg, on the opposite side of the Moselle , whose district Oberbillig was until 1816. Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815) and a border treaty concluded on October 7, 1816 at Kleve between the Kingdoms of Prussia and the Netherlands, Oberbillig became an independent municipality in the mayor's office of Wasserliesch in the Trier district in the Kingdom of Prussia . Formally, the Catholic parish of Oberbillig was from 1821 a branch of the parish Wasserliesch, but, although separated by the Moselle, remained in fact closely linked to the Luxembourg parish of Wasserbillig, and on April 4, 1871 became an independent parish.

On July 18, 1946, Oberbillig, together with 80 other municipalities in the districts of Trier and Saarburg , was annexed to Saarland, which was separated from the rest of the French occupation zone in February 1946 . On June 6, 1947, this territorial outsourcing was withdrawn down to 21 municipalities; thus Oberbillig came to the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946 .
