Hanja : 서울 驛
Revised Romanization : Seoulyeok
McCune-Reischauer : Sŏulyŏk

The Central Station Seoul (Seoul Station) ( kor . 서울역) is the main station of the South Korean capital Seoul . It is located in the city center.

history

Old station building, built 1922-25.

The first station building from 1900 was 33 m 2 in size, made of wood and named after the nearby city gate Namdaemun . The station served the Gyeongin Line . This was first built in 1899 by Incheon to Noryangjin . The remaining 10 km to the capital Seoul were completed by July 1900, with the Han River being crossed by a 600 m long bridge. Namdaemun was next to Seodaemun one of the two endpoints of the route in Seoul. The Gyeongbu Line, opened in 1905, and the Gyeongui Line , opened in 1921 , also served Namdaemun Station, which was renamed Gyeongsong in 1923.

Construction of the old station building began in 1922 and was finished in 1925. The brick building designed by Tsukamoto Yasushi stands out with its Byzantine dome and symmetrical layout.

After the end of the Japanese occupation in 1947 the name was changed from "Gyeongseong Station" to "Seoul Station". The southern extension was completed in 1957 and the western extension in 1969.

The new entrance building was built for the 1988 Olympic Games , the terminal for the KTX in 2004. Since 2011, the “Culture Seoul Station 284” cultural complex has been located in the old entrance building.
