action

Marienbad , a small town in northern Spain, is threatened by an ominous power in 1965. Mordecai Salas, a disciple of Aleister Crowley , plunged the inhabitants of the small town into disaster with like-minded people. The population falls into madness, cannibalism and lust. The community is also characterized by murder, self-mutilation and resurrection of the dead. In the midst of the chaos, Mayor Borgia decides to flood the place and build a dam . Evil should be banished in the floods. Unfortunately the plan fails. The black magician Salas, who previously fell into a trap with his followers, is freed by two playing children during the flood - which a boy immediately regrets. He is brutally murdered.

Forty years later, the newly built town of Debaria on the reservoir is plagued by mysterious deaths. Photojournalist Dan Quarry wants to investigate the phenomenon. Meanwhile, Clara Borgia, the granddaughter of the recently deceased mayor, also visits the village. The young woman is accompanied by two friends and her mother Teresa, a journalist who uses the stay for a TV report.

At some point Clara's companion had an accident under mysterious circumstances in the artificial body of water; the corpse remains missing. Diver Dan Quarry offers to help. In the murky water, however, he discovers something worrying. The dam is criss-crossed by wide cracks, a catastrophe inevitable. The local authorities are trying to avoid scandals on the occasion of the upcoming 40th anniversary. For the city fathers, the evidence doesn't matter. After more deaths, Dan and Teresa begin their own investigations. These lead the two, who have come closer in the meantime, to a survivor of that time. The eccentric man - a playmate of the careless boy who freed Salas - tells his astonished visitors about Marienbad's history in general and Salas. A little later he is murdered by the gaunt revenant in front of the investigative journalists.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants are drawn into their spell by the mysterious dark power that begins to rise from the water. In addition, hordes of the undead attack the area. Clara, who has been plagued by her grandfather's surreal visions since her arrival, arouses Salas' interest. He tries to subjugate the granddaughter of his opponent, but the strong-willed young woman resists the temptation. Dan and Teresa manage to save Clara and kill Salas. In an open end, the dam breaks with unexpected consequences for those present.

criticism

“Based on a book, Brian Yuzna ('Re-Animator') created an extremely bloody trip into madness. Unfortunately, wooden actors and a drawing board dramaturgy reduce the disturbing effect of the formidable make-up effects. "
