Return of the Zombies (original title: Le notti del terrore , dt Alternative title:. Zombie 3 - Return of the Zombies ) is an Italian low budget - splatter film from 1980, which directed by Andrea Bianchi was born.

The exploitation film , which was made in just a few days, consists mainly of escape and attack scenes between a group of young people and half-decayed undead who rise from their graves due to experiments with magic formulas of the Etruscans .

action

A bearded archeology professor researches ancient rites of the Etruscans on an old, spacious property , especially the secret and well-guarded knowledge of the survival of the dead. His main focus is in an underground tomb , which when examined he accidentally and initially unnoticed triggers a mechanism that releases some walking creatures that immediately kill him in a bestial manner.

On the same day, the wealthy lord of the castle, George, together with his lover Evelyn and their adolescent son Michael, who was damaged by the Oedipus conflict , as well as two befriended couples, visited his noble country estate to spend a wonderful holiday together. The group is initially surprised that the bizarre scientist who promised them good news has stayed away , but soon goes their own way. Separately from one another, the couples go for long walks in the adjoining castle park in the late afternoon .

Meanwhile, the half-decayed, battered creatures rise and stroll purposefully around making strange noises. Her first victim is the armed George who, despite massive resistance, is surrounded by the creatures and killed in the nearby pavilion. Previously, he had devotedly managed to distract the monsters from Evelyn and Michael, who took their chance and fled. At the same time, the two other couples make the involuntary "acquaintance" with the living corpses and flee towards the parking lot or castle. On the way, the attractive Janet gropes in a leghold , screams for help for her friend, the photographer Mark, who, after he fends off an attack by the undead together with the summoned James and his friend Janet, finally frees her in pain. Then the group of four continues their escape with the injured Janet and meets Evelyn and Michael in front of the castle. Since an escape with the cars, whose tires the zombies have stabbed, seems hopeless, it is decided to barricade together with the service staff of the old walls.

In the meantime, night has fallen and the situation has eased a little. At this point, however, the outnumbered creatures resume their raids with undiminished severity. In addition to using tools, these powerful beings also have unimagined climbing skills, so that they soon kill the black-haired Leslie in addition to the housekeeper Kathleen. It soon becomes apparent that the shelter, which is felt to be safe, cannot withstand the onslaught of rotten corpses. Nevertheless, the group initially manages to fend off some attackers in a real show of strength. But conflicts also arise within the group and escalate. So Michael frightens so much that he wants to be close and love of his mother, even immoral touched until she gives him clearly to understand that she had between family tolerated relationship in any way. A short time later, the disturbed, instinctual boy is torn to pieces by Leslie, who is believed to be dead and has since mutated into a zombie , before she too becomes a victim of the avenging Evelyn. In the meantime, the venerable building is literally overrun by an overwhelming force of the undead. Since they are not in a position to stop them, the decimated group decides, previously the house servant Nicolas was attacked and killed by the mutated professor, to lure all the monsters into the building and to gain enough head start for an imminent escape. Their plan succeeds and they can escape.

At dawn, Mark, James, the traumatized Evelyn and the injured Janet arrive at an apparently saving monastery , which, however, turns out to be a zombie stronghold on closer inspection. In a prayer room, James is overwhelmed and eaten by a horde of beasts amid loud shouts. As a result of this deed, he too turns into a flesh-hungry zombie, while the three remaining living people run away. Her odyssey leads her to a nearby studio that is also populated by a multitude of zombies, including the transformed Michael. Full of motherly happiness, Evelyn takes her son, believed dead, in her arms, who instinctively and extremely brutally bites her in the chest and kills her. At the end of the film, Janet and Mark are also surrounded and harassed by a large number of zombies. At this point, the film does not provide any information about their whereabouts.

Home theater publications

Already in 1982, years before VHS and DVD, the UFA from Essen published an editing version of approx. 50 minutes total duration, divided into 3 roles, for the Super 8 home cinema market, which was then in the recession cheap, sales price of only 69 DM in total; this was also the last UFA Super 8 release in Essen. This cut version is one of the most sought-after releases among Super 8 feature film collectors today and is fetching high prices.

Reviews

"Despite some effective sequences, an extremely questionable horror film full of cynicism and bloodthirstiness."

Remarks

The short Pietro Barzocchini, at the time of shooting in his 25th year of life, was cast as Peter Bark in the role of a younger teenage child.
