occupation

Monster Brawl is a 2010 Canadian horror comedy directed by Jesse T. Cook . The wrestling- inspired film pits classic monsters and the undead against each other.

action

The film is about a wrestling tournament that lets eight classic horror characters compete against each other in a tournament for life and death in two factions: Cyclops , Werewolf , the Swamp Gut (based on Swamp Thing ) and Witch Bitch as "Creatures", Frankenstein's monster , Lady Vampire, Mummy and Zombie Man as "Undead". In addition to the two opening fights, there is also a tournament for the heavyweight title. The fights, which are held almost without rules, go up to the death of the opponent. As a referee, MMA legend Herb Dean is supposed to monitor the fights. Buzz Chambers and Sasquatch Sid are employed as commentators. Jimmy Hart has been hired as ring announcer .

Before each fight, the history of the origins of the fighters is presented. First of all, the opening matches that do not belong to the tournament take place. Cyclops takes on Witch Bitch. During the relentless fight, Witch Bitch kills the referee with a knife, so that further fights have to be fought without him. She then tries to blind Cyclops, but is beheaded with a single blow.

In the second fight, the mummy competes against Lady Vampire. Lady Vampire succeeds in smashing the mummy's amulet and defeating it. She is now the winner of the Lightweight Championship.

Then the actual tournament begins. Swamp Gut competes against the werewolf. Although Swamp Gut has a clear advantage in terms of strength, the werewolf manages to exploit the power of the moon and after jumping from the top rope, Swamp Gut explodes, with which the werewolf goes one round further. In the next match, Zombie Man and Frankenstein compete against each other. Zombie Man, who was created through a military experiment, is accompanied by Colonel Crookshank, while Frankenstein's monster is accompanied by Dr. Igora is accompanied personally. When the doctor intervenes, Colonel Crookshank kills him. This enrags the monster and it can destroy Zombie Man, who, however, manages to summon six zombies. These bite Crookshank and moderator Sid, among others, before they can be destroyed.

Then it comes to the final: the werewolf and Frankenstein compete against each other. The match is very even at first. Then the werewolf wins the upper hand and believes he is the victor when Frankenstein's monster makes a surprising comeback and he can destroy the werewolf. He grabs the title, but just as he is about to disappear, he is posed and challenged by the zombified Colonel Crookshank. Before the fight starts, the credits follow.

reception

Monster Brawl received generally poor reviews. The lexicon of international films writes: "A clumsy attempt to sell wrestling with costumes as a film."

Moviebreak.de -Author Thomas Repenning writes:

“To sum up, Monster Brawl can best be described as an MTV Celebrity Deathmatch / Mortal Kombat / WWE tournament, which, despite quite good fights, has little to offer, especially apart from it. It hardly helps that director Jesse T. Cook was able to get a lot of help from the WWE scene (including Robert Maillet, RJ Skinner, Kevin Nash), so that the fights are particularly characterized by wrestling moves. "
