Der Fluch - The Grudge (in German: Der Groll , German subtitle: Der Fluch , original title: The Grudge ) is a remake of the Japanese horror film / thriller Juon: The Curse by Takashi Shimizu from 2004 . It belongs to the Ju-on range . Shimizu also directed the remake, but Stephen Susco adapted the script specifically for the western market.
action
For the sake of clarity, the action is not presented in the order of the narration, but chronologically.
Kayako Saeki is unhappily married to her husband Takeo. She develops an obsession with a college professor named Peter Kirk who works at a university in Tokyo . Unlike Kayako, Peter is happily married, but she persecutes him in spite of everything, writes him love letters and keeps a diary in which she records her love for him. One day her husband discovers the diary and kills Kayako by breaking her neck, and in his anger he drowns his son Toshio and his cat in the bathtub, after which he kills himself. This brutal process creates a curse in the house that condemns Kayako, Toshio and the cat to an undead existence in which they kill everyone who enters the house in which they died. Peter wants to find out who is writing him love letters and is the first to enter the house after the murder. He discovers the diary, finds the corpses of Kayako and her husband and flees the house in a panic. The next day he commits in front of his wife suicide by crashing from the balcony of their apartment.
Three years later, the American Williams family moves into the house, unaware of the incidents and the curse that weighs on the house. Emma, the grandmother of the family, is in need of care, so a care institute is called in to provide support. The curse kills the entire family except for Emma, and the caregiver Yoko is also afflicted by the curse.
Since Yoko does not show up for work the next day, the exchange student Karen is assigned by the head of the institute, Alex, to look after Emma Williams. In the house she meets the ghost of Toshio, who apparently was locked in a closet by Emma. When she tries to take care of Emma, the spirit of Kayako reveals itself to Karen. This kills Emma and leaves Karen in shock . In the evening, Alex checks that everything is going well, finds Karen and the dead Emma and calls the police with Detective Nakagawa, who finds the bodies of Emma's son and his wife in the attic.
After Karen recovered from her shock in the hospital, she tries to find out what happened in the house. She finds out that the Saeki family drama took place in the house and that the next day Peter Kirk committed suicide. Karen then tries to find out the background of Peter's widow and notices that Kayako can be seen in the background in every photo that shows Peter and his wife. Gradually she realizes what happened.
Nakagawa realizes about the curse in the house and its situation that he too will fall victim to the curse. He decides to burn the house down, but is then drowned in the bathtub by Takeo.
When Karen arrives home, she discovers that her boyfriend Doug is trying to find her in the house. Panicking with fear, Karen runs to the house to keep it from falling victim to the curse, but she's too late. In the house, the whole story of the tragedy is revealed to her, and Kayako kills Doug. Karen sets the house on fire with the gasoline cans from Nakagawa. But the house is saved and the film ends with Karen meeting Kayako again while inspecting Doug's body in the morgue. They stand back to back and the ghost of the murdered lets in, for the time being, for the last time its gruesome cracking noises.
Trivia
In the original of the first shot, the protagonist is wearing a T-shirt with the words “German supermarket RAWE - So that you shop well”, based on the German supermarket chain REWE .
The role of Kayako is played in the Ju-On films as well as in the American remakes of Takako Fuji .

Since the film Ring , a remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu , was a success at the box office, many film studios thought about adapting Japanese horror films (so-called J-horror ) for the western market, including Dark Water , St. John's Wort and also Ju-on : The Grudge. The film played in the United States 110 million dollars and was therefore, despite poor reviews in the US box office.
Remakes / sequels
Nineteen days after the film started, the sequel was announced. The film was released on November 9, 2006. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays a supporting role while Takashi Shimizu directs again. The plot introduces Karen's sister, played by Amber Tamblyn , who stars in the film. The film is titled The Curse - The Grudge 2 .
In the meantime, a third part ( Der Fluch - The Grudge 3 ) has been published, which Shimizu has at least produced. Matthew Knight stars in the film, which is only available on DVD.
The Japanese original series already includes five parts, two of which are practically remakes. The Grudge is therefore the remake of a remake.
criticism
“The director, who also staged the original, succeeds in an adequate, more elaborate and drastic new staging of the ghost material, without setting new accents. It is true that the American actors seem like foreign bodies that have been attached; nevertheless, the film is not without its charm as routine entertainment for lovers of interestingly constructed ghost stories. "
