action

In the 1970s, the United States viewed the Vietnam War with concern and profound skepticism. Even while the public is concerned with the unforeseeable consequences, the government and the military are secretly developing a way to use the reanimated dead as fighting machines. The experiments are stopped at some point, as the undead's greed for human flesh seems uncontrollable. Decades later, this research is clandestinely resumed in the no-mapped towns of Downey and Grover City . The scientists fail again, however. A deadly virus escapes - with fatal consequences. The virus looks for a host, and after it dies it mutates into a zombie, which in turn hunts down the living in order to infect them.

Chris and his two friends Scott and Tim, all students of the local high school, want to attend an evening music event in the neighboring town of Grover City. Before they leave, they witness a bizarre incident when a bloodied classmate attacks and bites a teacher. At first, those present did not attach any importance to the incident. This changes when the trio reaches the concert venue in the evening, which is already populated by an angry horde of zombies. The friends are received with hostility. They flee to their hometown to warn the residents. However, they are too late. The area is almost completely besieged by the creatures. Chris is even forced to kill his zombie-mutated father, the coroner and commander of the secret operation, in self-defense.

The trio - in the meantime they save Chris' friend Jackie - flees to their high school in search of more survivors. Decimated, they finally reach the school area, where they are attacked again by angry beasts, to which Scott falls victim. The remaining couple, Chris and Jackie, are saved in this hopeless situation by Lee, the school caretaker. This reveals himself to them as a member of the US Army who was once stationed to monitor the experiments. The soldier tells of the past military activities, as well as of a serum in the local morgue, which is supposed to prevent the deadly pathogen from spreading to the human organism. Chris decides to salvage the substance on his own. As he and Jackie leave the morgue they are harassed by zombies - when the film ends abruptly.
