The US military special unit L-9 of the Green Beret is attacked by virus-infected soldiers during a military operation in a remote medical research station in Cambodia and is completely killed except for Lieutenant Robert "Bobby" Quinn. The trigger for the infection are scorpion-like insects that can revive dead cells - but require raw meat for this. Badly injured, Bobby manages to make an emergency call before he too dies.
Back in the United States at the Fort Preston military base in the US state of California , the body of the highly decorated lieutenant is being autopsied when he suddenly wakes up. Despite the lack of vital functions, Quinn is in excellent health , to the astonishment of the forensic doctor and the summoned military doctor. Rather, the eccentric shows immunity to narcotics, increased eyesight and hearing and superhuman strength, but also an insatiable desire for raw meat. He also senses the presence of his “dead” comrades on the base and decides to visit them. With the help of head chef Judson, he places the first person believed dead, Sgt. Cruz, in the kitchen, overpowers him and finally kills him. Two doctors who were previously bitten and infected by a zombie have a similar experience . You will be liquidated by the duo in self-defense. After this incident, the team was taken into custody by the military police , but fled because they were not believed - despite a detailed description of the situation.
In search of former members of Quinn's unit, the wanted refugees come to a bar, which is later stormed by three infected, soulless creatures. Quinn, Judson and their allied, attractive film student Holly, who works as a bartender, initially succeeds in preventing the virus from spreading by rendering the monsters and a large number of infected guests harmless. When the police arrested, however, they flee in a stolen police car.
Their journey takes them to the funeral home in Los Angeles , where they suspect the body of Private William "Bill" Sanderson. What they don't know, however, is that a group of mercenaries around the cancer-stricken, unscrupulous scientist Dr. Scott be received. Scott, who is also holding the wanted Sanderson prisoner, tries to isolate the virus with the help of a hematologist , but needs a blood sample from the headstrong Quinn and a so-called first-time infected subject : Sanderson for his research on healing and immortality . When he dies, however, he needs another undead infected with the virus.
He finds such an infected zombie on the Fort Preston military base, which has since been completely infiltrated and contaminated by second-infected creatures that are unimportant for research. When trying to isolate the undead or the insect, however, Dr. Scott and his entourage are overwhelmed and killed by the zombie horde.
Bobby, Holly and Judson, who are also in the military complex, then try to prevent the zombies from invading by blowing up the ammunition depot in a controlled manner - and they succeed. At the end of the film, you see the trio on the bombed military base, making plans for the future, liquidating infected people who are still alive.
