action

The rather poor auto mechanic Jake LaFond runs a poorly performing auto repair shop with his brother Denton in the small, rural community of Otis in the US state of Vermont . One day, the dissimilar brothers are hired by the local sheriff to tow an apparently abandoned pickup truck on a remote and unpaved road. When the two arrive at the said place, they find the technically perfect car of a friend who is a vehicle owner, who they suspect is in a nearby hunting lodge. Without further ado they decide to visit their boyfriend.

The area was previously the scene of an infestation of nudibranch-like, black parasites that killed several people, reproduced at breakneck speed in the infected host's organism, and ultimately turned their victims into willless and bloodthirsty undead . This increase in virus-like parasites gradually leads to the epidemic-like occurrence of cannibalistic zombies , who carry the pathogen from now on “hunt” people in order to bite them.

Jake and Denton are unaware of this as they approach the hut. A few moments later, they are suddenly attacked by a man-flesh-hungry monster, which Denton bites in the shoulder after an opaque scuffle and thus infected. His panicked brother kills the attacker and hurries back to the village, which was isolated by an accident, to get help for the injured man. Meanwhile, in the isolated community from the outside world, unusual events and sightings are increasing. Jake manages to mobilize his red-haired ex-girlfriend Alex, a biologist, and Sheriff Brubaker and to rescue the aggressive, blood-covered Denton - with fatal consequences for the residents of the village. The doomed Denton dies a little later in the holding cell of the prison and transfers the parasitic creatures to other people, who in turn mutate into zombies. The epidemic is spreading so rapidly.

The traumatized Jake flees with Alex and Randy from the street cleaning to the laboratory at the local college, where the biologist is examining a trapped slimy parasite when Randy accidentally discovers an antidote. The deadly monsters are extremely vulnerable to salt ! After this discovery, the three young people, who are entangled in a romantic love triangle, try to warn the inhabitants of the village of the invasive plague. However, they come too late, most of the people around them are already infected.

The trio does not want to submit to their inevitable fate without a fight and tries to prevent the spread of the strange pathogen with other survivors. The thrown together community plans the complete and as soon as possible destruction of all undead with a salty solution. To do this, the invaders are first lured into an adjacent paper mill . Randy is bitten in the meantime. Nevertheless, the remaining couple, only Alex and Jake surviving, manage to wet the zombies with salty sewage at the end of the film , so that they are apparently eliminated. In the open end, the lovers already think they are safe and are making plans for a future together in North Carolina , when some creatures believed to be dead appear in good physical condition unnoticed by the couple.

Reviews

Blickpunkt: Film wrote the film was a “low-budget splatter movie with disgusting factor A.” The film magazine VideoWoche only recommends the film to ambitious “genre viewers” because of the “rather mediocre craft” with “a lot of blood and little salary” .
