action
A hitherto unknown deadly virus wiped out large parts of the population within a few hours. The victims of the undead epidemic die a horrific death just moments after being infected. Subsequently, the corpses awaken as walking revenants (the term “ zombie ” is not used) to exterminate the scattered remains of human civilization.
Public life comes to a standstill as a result of the epidemic . The electricity and water supply fail, the telephone network collapses. The few survivors join forces in cities to form communities of fate. There, disputes arise again and again among those seeking protection, which threaten to escalate without food. In the confines of such a community of convenience, which is located on the edge of an unspecified city, the three main characters meet: medical student Emma, doctoral student Carl and educator Michael. The trio initially speculated with other fellow sufferers about the origin of the pathogen. A little later, they watch with worry how staggering creatures dominate the new streetscape. It appears that these are infected people in a progressive state of physical decline. The three decide to leave the desolate area to try their luck away from the crowds in the countryside.
The group chooses a remote farmhouse for new accommodation. In the seclusion there is also contact with the omnipresent species. Emma discovers the first indications for an evolutionary development of creatures: a constant improvement of all sensory perception and motor skills . When the "runners" react aggressively to any form of noise and light development a little later, the trio begins an anxious existence in silence and darkness. Out of fear, the three create a safe environment, which initially withstands sieges every evening. One day Carl, who cannot overcome the loss of his partner and has only lived on since then, pushes back to his ancestral home. Emma and Michael remain confused. On his return - in the meantime he has convinced himself of the death of his family - he is unexpectedly injured by raging undead. The once harmless-looking figures have now degenerated into instinct-driven, aggressive beasts. At the end of the film, these storm the trio's lair. Carl recognizes the hopelessness of the situation and sacrifices himself. With suicidal intent, he distracts the living dead from his friends and thus helps them to escape.
