Versus is a Japanese Action - Fantasy - splatter film by Ryuhei Kitamura from the year 2000.

action

After a prison break, prisoner KSC2-303 ends up in the Forest of Resurrection, where he is chased by Yakuza gangsters from whose clutches he frees a girl. The Forest of Resurrection is teeming with the undead that were previously tortured, murdered and buried by the yakuza gangsters. KSC2-303 fights his way through the zombie hordes just mentioned throughout the entire film, only to meet his greatest enemy at the end, with whom he then fights in a sword fight.

background

Kitamura worked on Versus as an independent director for over two years, as there was no producer who wanted to produce the film.

In the style of old samurai films like Dai-bosatsu tōge or Lady Snowblood , a lot of blood flows in the various fights, various other stylistic elements used can also be traced back to them. Kitamura himself named Akira Kurosawa as one of his role models. However, not only katanas are used in the battles , various firearms and other modern weapons are also used. Accordingly, the representation of violence is a lot more drastic and explicit than in classic Japanese samurai films.

Since the film was shot on a low budget, some errors crept in, which were eliminated in the "Ultimate Edition" (only released in Japan and France) with the help of improved effects and subsequently shot scenes. Versus was the basis for the further career of director Ryūhei Kitamura and made it possible for him to shoot other, also much more complex films.

Reviews

"So when I see films like Versus, the title of a live LP by Thrash Metal Haudegen Exodus always comes to mind:" Good Friendly Violent Fun "."
