Children of the Living Dead is an American direct-to-video - Horror director Tor Ramsey from 2001 onwards.

action

The action takes place in the American provinces. Serial killer and rapist Abbott Hayes, a man with a difficult childhood, has been responsible for the progressive infestation of a region by zombies resurrected from a neighboring cemetery since his mysterious disappearance from the morgue . A large number of armed units prevents a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions by successfully opposing the host of the walking undead . One of these brave fighters is ex-police officer Hughs, who single-handedly "cleans" a larger area and then visits the neighboring Hayes farm together with his ex-colleague Sheriff Randolph to make sure that there isn't a group of missing schoolchildren. Contrary to expectations, however, they find the children they are looking for locked up, apparently unharmed. The zombies, for some inexplicable reason, have no interest in them. During the rescue operation, Hughs is attacked again by monsters and ultimately infected by the mummified Abbott Hayes, while the sheriff present grants him a coup de grace and escapes from the property with the children.

Fifteen years later, the entrepreneur Joseph Michaels bought the old farmhouse and property in order to build another branch of his car dealership there. He sends his inexperienced son Matthew to the provinces to supervise the construction crew with the unscrupulous Gregg. There, of all places, is a cemetery that the locals have avoided, from which various corpses have already disappeared. This should be eliminated regardless of all warnings. Normally the coffins are supposed to be relocated, but due to the enormous cost pressure, the Sheriff Randolph involved accepts a secret mass burial in a pit on the site. The butcher Abbott Hayes feels disturbed by the construction work. Together with his band of undead and four of the now grown-up children who were spared at the time, he attacks the people.

Laurie, the only remaining survivor of yore, finally clears up Matthew about the strange activities. Together with the sheriff and the construction workers present, they face the living dead. A real bloodbath ensues, almost all zombies can be stopped. While the victorious shooters enjoy their triumph at night, the almost invincible Hayes strides unscathed from the scene of the massacre in the last scene of the film.

background

Children of the Living Dead tried by the participation of make-up artist Tom Savini (which, however, only five minutes to see) and John A. Russo , Night of the Living Dead -Koautor and producer of The Return of the Living Dead at to continue the wave of success of the Living Dead series and sell itself as a legitimate sequel. The “children” in this case does not refer to the age of the undead, but to the second generation.

The film was made in summer 2000 in Pittsburgh with a budget of only 500,000 US dollars . It was released on June 11, 2001 as a video premiere in the United States. The first German publication appeared on February 14, 2002 via MIB with the subtitle Zombie 2001 as a "Special - Uncut Version" with a running time of 86 minutes. In fact, there is no post-credits scene, which was only added in a new release in 2017.

Even producer John Russo described the film in retrospect as "horrific" and called it "The Living Abomination of Children" (roughly: "Living monstrosity in children"). Joe Wolf convinced John Russo to participate in the project, who did not know that Karen L. Wolf, the screenwriter, was Wolfe's daughter and that the script was scrap from his point of view. At this point, however, he had already recruited Savini, Bill Hinzman (as cameraman), Jeff Gergely and Vince Guastini and tried to save the film. Director Tor Ramsey later apologized for the film and described the entire shoot as a disaster.

Karen L. Wolf in particular is said to have played her part in the disastrous result. because she did not allow any criticism of her script and deliberately kept the budget small. However, Ramsey also blamed the producer for doing without important set standards such as assistant director and art department and for deliberately keeping the budget small.

Reviews

The film was generally rated poor. A big problem is that all dialogues have been dubbed and the dialogues have not been adapted to the movements of the mouth. The German dubbing did the rest. The film magazine Cinema wrote : “Above all, the synchro and the lack of imagination of the makers are scary” and described the film as “video store junk”. The page kino.de described the film as "screwed up". Haiko's film dictionary wrote:

“For example, with the best will in the world, it is impossible to see what the god of horror Tom Savini should have done to star in such a film. Here he kills zombies non-stop and his scenes are among the most embarrassing of the whole strip. His cheap dubbing voice alone breaks a lot. They used cheap actors and music that destroys the rest of the tension. But one thing makes the film worth seeing again: The very successful make-up effects. "
