Sankarea ( Japanese さ ん か れ あ ) is a romantic-comical horror manga by Mitsuru Hattori , which is about love for a zombie.

action

The student Chihiro Furuya attends the Shiyo boys' high school and is a big zombie fan who dreams of having a "cute zombie girl" as a friend. For a few days he has been going into an abandoned building every night and using a recipe on an old scroll he tries to resurrect his recently run over cat Bābu as a zombie. In the abandoned building he meets Rea Sanka from the neighboring Sanka Girls' High School, who uses the remoteness of the house to scream out her frustration that her compulsive father is keeping her in a "golden cage". Chihiro and Rea become friends on this occasion. As a result, they often meet there and try to revive Bābu together

Together they try a lot of poisonous plants for the recipe, including a new recipe based on hydrangeas , which doesn't seem to work at first. Once at home, however, the cat Bābu wakes up as an undead, while Rea tries at the same time to take his own life with the drug. Her attempted suicide fails, but Rea later falls to death in an argument with her father Dan'ichirō Sanka, who wanted to beat the cat with a whip, but then wakes up shortly afterwards as a zombie. Rea is enthusiastic about it, because she can now lead a new "life" as a normal girl and moves in with Chihiro. Chihiro discovers that she is going into rigor mortis, which means her body will be rotten in a month. Rea's zombie instincts awaken and she bites Chihiro, who learns from his senile grandfather in one of his rare, lucid moments that Rea regularly eats hydrangeas and must be kept cool to slow the decline of mind and body. Rea's father kidnaps Chihiro and challenges him to a fencing duel for Rea. Chihiro provokes the father and is then stabbed by him. However, thanks to Rea's bite, which briefly turned him into half a zombie, he survived. Dan'ichirō wants to free Rea from her condition, but she refuses because it would mean leaving Chihiro and her friends. Chihiro persuades Dan'ichirō that he should stop imposing his ideals on his daughter and let her live as she wants. Whereupon Dan'ichirō actually entrusts them to Chihiro.

Chihiro's cousin Ranko, supposedly jokingly, introduces himself to Rea as his fiancée. But Rea realizes that Ranko really loves him. At the same time, a foreign girl named Darin Kurumiya appears at Chihiro, who calls her grandfather “Professor Boil” and claims to have previously carried out zombie research with him. She then moves in with Chihiro to study Rea. On Rea's body, the first signs of deterioration appear in the form of peeling skin on her fingertips. Chihiro's little sister Mero remembers her late mother, who had a bandaged hand, and that Rea looks like her. Also through her behavior. In the next chapter, Darin tells Rea that in her experience she will lose her human behavior in about a week. Rea comments on the process by saying that this is an even bigger reason than before to enjoy her life as a zombie. She later explains that the loss of human behavior goes hand in hand with the fact that for a zombie, affection and appetite become the same and therefore she will consume her loved ones.

Ranko and Rea speak out and Ranko tells Rea not to hold back about Chihiro because they are both rivals for his love. On one occasion, Rea wants to kiss Chihiro. But her zombie instincts are awakened and she bites a piece of meat out of his throat. She runs away in shock. Chihiro has a dream about his mother during his recovery in which she says that she has to leave him and Mero because she loves them both. Chihiro finds Rea, who has been chained for fear of hurting Chihiro again. Rea's zombie instincts wake up again and she begins to eat his arm. Chihiro appeals to her humanity and confesses to having loved her from the beginning when she was still human. His last wish is that after she has finished eating him, she goes back to his home. This wakes Rea out of her trance. Chihiro's grandfather and Darin are amazed that for the first time a zombie has become human again after fully entering the “predatory phase”. Ranko describes Chihiro as a monster to Rea, as he almost died twice because of Rea, which she can no longer stand. She kisses him and then takes pills from an ampoule that she stole from Darin and that she is supposed to turn into a zombie so that Chihiro will love her. It turns out Darin only used the ampoule for antihistamines . Chihiro realizes that Ranko has loved him for a long time and apologizes to her for not noticing. Ranko says her only wish is to continue to love him, albeit unrequited.

Characters

Chihiro Furuya ( 降 谷 千 紘 , Furuya Chihiro )
Chihiro is a first year high school student (10th grade). He is of a rather small stature and his hairstyle and facial expressions are partly feline in character. As a big zombie fan, he is pleased that with Rea, his dreams of a cute zombie girl have come true. Since childhood he has been friends with his cousin Ranko, whom he constantly raises.
Rea Sanka ( 散 華 礼 弥 , Sanka Rea )
Rea comes from a rich and respected family. Her father Dan'ichirō loves her obsessively and she grows up very sheltered and with many prohibitions, so that her greatest wish is to lead the life of a normal girl. Her birth mother died shortly after she was born and her stepmother treated her negatively. An accident turns her into a zombie, which on the one hand she likes because it allows her to lead a free life outside of her father's "golden cage" - on the other hand, she is shocked by her zombie instincts, after which she wants to eat Chihiro what he would be in her, what she finds very romantic. As a zombie, she has greater physical strength and can easily lift a massive wooden park bench. To slow her body's decline, she must eat hydrangea leaves and generally wears packs of dry ice under her clothes.
Ranko "Wanko" Saōji ( 左 王子 蘭 子 , Saōji Ranko )
Ranko, called by Chihiro Wanko, is his cousin, one year older. Her family runs a Kaiseki -Gaststätte. She loves Chihiro from an early age and is close to him whenever possible. In terms of her behavior, she is rather boyish, but has a very feminine body, which she sometimes uses subtly to arouse Chihiros interest in her. Chihiro is unaware of this, as the only friend he can consider is a zombie, and treats her more like a best friend.
Darin Arciento Kurumiya ( 来 宮 ・ ダ リ ン ・ ア ー シ ェ ン ト , Kurumiya Darin Āshento )
At 14, Darin is a little younger than Chihiro and Ranka, but has been dealing with zombies since they were six years old because of their father's job. She later followed him in his calling and also became a zombie researcher, her specialty being reassembling zombies to make them safe. Since she had to move constantly because of her father and later helped her father and Chihiro's grandfather with their research, she never had friends. However, over time, she and Rea become something of best friends. Your companion is an undead owl, but at least half of it is a robot.
Mero Furuya ( 降 谷 萌 路 , Furuya Mero )
Mero is Furuya's 12-year-old little sister. She has a reserved, calm character and, when she speaks, precocious expression. Mero loves to read the Heart Sutra , her hobby is copying sutras by hand and she is interested in ghosts ( Yūrei ), which is also expressed in the fact that she dresses like one at home, ie a simple, white one Wearing a kimono and a triangular forehead covering ( hitai eboshi ).
Jogorō Furuya ( 降 谷 茹 五郎 , Furuya Jogorō )
Jogorō is Chihiros and Mero's grandfather. He is demented and almost blind, which is why he wears thick glasses. Both come from the fact that he used to be a scientist in zombie research and during the experiments he was exposed to their poison, which they inject when they bite. Occasionally, however, he has his clear moments and helps Chihiro. For unknown reasons, he calls Rea Sada, who has come back to life. From Darin, who was with his research at the time, he is called Professor Boil ( ボ イ ル 教授 , Boiru-kyōju ).
Dan'ichirō Sanka ( 散 華 団 一郎 , Sanka Dan'ichirō )
He is Sanka's father and is described as extremely obsessive towards her. This manifests itself in the fact that when he learns that Rea is meeting with Chihiro, he takes her from school and gives the order to castrate Chihiro. He also has Rea take a nude picture of her every birthday, supposedly to record her development. Much to the frustration of his wife Aria, he has no interest in adult women and the only one he loved besides Rea was her birth mother, who was 15 years old when she got Rea and he was still a student.
