action

Scientists from the fictitious US agency IDC are experimenting with biological warfare agents in an underground research laboratory when a catastrophe with serious consequences suddenly occurs. A gas of the so-called “Series 14”, which contains an air- transmitting pathogen , escapes . The deadly substance kills the infected, produces toxins and changes the victims into extremely aggressive, carnivorous and almost immortal beasts. The bites of these instinctual creatures are deadly. Unfortunately, this organism is released into the atmosphere, where it quickly causes a nationwide epidemic . The omnipresent monsters chase the few survivors from now on.

In front of this scenario, the African-American security worker Frank Chambers escapes together with a pale little girl to an abandoned warehouse in the middle of an empty and dilapidated steel mill . The place serves Chambers as a meeting point with an upgraded special unit of the IDC, which is to assist him on his dangerous mission, the escort of the little girl into a bunker complex. In the extensive factory area, the government employee unexpectedly encounters other survivors who hide here from the cannibalistic creatures. In the area besieged by angry monsters, there is initially panic. The isolated trapped cannot explain these sudden attacks or the existence of the monsters; Chambers is silent. However, the officer waiting to be rescued kept a cool head and initially organized the defense.

When the longed-for reinforcement is completely killed by the angry beings at night, Chambers gradually changes his tactical concept. Help can no longer be expected. The otherwise secretive character allows the survivors, including the courageous Douglas, to participate in his project. His plan is to go with the others to a well-secured nuclear shelter in Texas, where he wants to deliver his "valuable" guest, the pale, nameless girl. The little one is of great use to the scientists because it contains some kind of immune serum in her body. For the bunker, however, Chambers needs a key made up of access cards from slaughtered soldiers. In a daring action, Chambers's team manages to get the necessary parts together; for many, the action ends with death.

After their accommodation was overrun by the creatures in the meantime, the few survivors make their way to a minibus to start the journey to the rescuing US state of Texas. Violent fighting ensued. The pale beauty sacrifices herself to the host of monsters with suicidal intent, Chambers dies before leaving. Only three trapped people ultimately manage to escape. At the end of the film, the trio reached the supposed security when they gained access to the bunker system without suspecting that there are murderous beings around here too.

criticism

The lexicon of international film subsumed its slap: "Dreary new edition of Romero's zombie" -classic that offers nothing more than the most modest craft. "
