One Cut of the Dead ( Japanese original title: カ メ ラ を 止 め る な!, Hepburn : Camera o Tomeru na!, Something like "Don't stop the camera!") Is a Japanese zombie film by Shin'ichirô Ueda from 2017. The Film on May 2, 2019. The first half hour of the film was shot in one piece without editing - a so-called one-shot .
action
The film begins with a young woman being attacked by her friend who has apparently mutated into a zombie , until a person breaks off the scene and insults them both. It turns out that the two are actors and that director Higurashi is far from happy with their performance. The shooting is therefore interrupted for a half-hour break. The members of the film crew are talking about that on set, an old factory, in World War II experiments were performed on dead people, when suddenly erupts really a zombie apocalypse. The director is now excited to capture the real moments of fear and lets the camera keep rolling and focus on the action while the crew members gradually become zombies. After a good half an hour, the young woman is the only survivor on the roof of the factory.
But now the film reveals another level: director Higurashi is hired to film a half-hour zombie film live in a single uncut sequence for a TV event . The following shows how the film crew first gets together and then how the film is shot despite all the adversities. The problems behind the camera, such as a drunk actor, and the improvisations during the shoot are shown.
Production and publication
One Cut of the Dead only cost a five-digit dollar amount to produce, but it was able to attract more than two million people to the cinema in Japan alone. According to Moviepilot , the film, which was shot with students at a film school in Tokyo, only cost about $ 27,000 but grossed over $ 20 million in Japan by fall 2018.
Between Christmas and New Year's Eve 2018, Amazon briefly published a pirated copy of the film on the Amazon Prime platform , which was temporarily free to customers in the USA and Great Britain.
The film was released in German cinemas on May 2, 2019. On May 23, 2019, the film was released in Germany by Koch Media on Blu-ray Disc and DVD .

reception
The film received mostly positive ratings. Metacritic aggregated a score of 85% based on 13 reviews. Rotten Tomatoes even got a 100% positive critic rating. Kino-Zeit.de describes One Cut of the Dead as a “deep, respectful bow to the art of low-budget filmmaking” and attests to a deep devotion to cinema.
“The much-touted planned sequence in One Cut of the Dead is nice, forgettable fun in and of itself, which is more impressive because it could be implemented on a minimal budget. What helps the Japanese festival hit out of the self-dug pit of this gimmick is its clever approach to precisely this stylistic device. "
Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian felt reminded of the American comedy Noises Off , because there too, an acting performance with its adversities is shown from different perspectives.
Remake
A remake of the film is to be created under producer Patrick Cunningham, which is intended to appeal to a larger audience - especially in English-speaking countries. The remake is supposed to be created on a shoestring budget in the USA . Producer Cunningham came to the film rights when he settled a dispute between director Shin'ichirô Ueda and Japanese theater director Ryoichi Wada, who accused the former of plagiarism.
