biography
Kevin Gates was February 5, 1986 in New Orleans as the son of a Moroccan father and a Puerto Rican mother and grew up in Baton Rouge in the US state of Louisiana . His family moved to Baton Rouge shortly after he was born. At the age of 20 he started to publish his own mixtapes. After Pick of Litter since (2007) was followed by a number of other mixtapes before 2013. The Luca Brasi Story came the breakthrough. He was discovered by rappers like Pusha T and Gudda Gudda and received a recording deal from Atlantic Records . The mixtape reached a position in the R&B charts.
In the same year his debut album Stranger Than Fiction was released on the indie label Breadwinners Association , in which Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J had collaborated, among others . He made it into the top 10 of the US rap charts and at number 37 on the official sales charts . A year later he was number 3 on the rap charts with the mix tape By Any Means . Plies and 2 Chainz were there. The successor to his breakthrough mixtape Luca Brasi 2 had greater commercial success in 2015 . Although it did not achieve any new highs, it stayed in the sales charts for half a year. With I Don't Get Tired (together with August Alsina ) he had his first single hit.
Another hit on the Hot 100 was Really Really in late 2015 . It was a pre-release for the second album Islah , the first on the major label Atlantic , which is named after his eldest daughter and in which no guest musicians were involved. It was released in January 2016 and reached number 1 on rap albums and number 2 on the official album charts.
