August Alsina (* 3. September 1992 in New Orleans , Louisiana ; actually August Alsina Anthony, Jr. ) is an American hip-hop - musicians , Contemporary R & B - singer and rapper . He is under contract with Def Jam Recordings .

Life

August Alsina grew up in poor conditions with his four siblings in Houston and New Orleans . His father was a drug addict and his mother tried two jobs to support the family. He attended middle school in New Orleans and high school in Texas. Gang crime was ubiquitous in New Orleans during his teens. His brother was shot dead in New Orleans on April 16, 2010 at the age of 24.

As a teenager he discovered his love for music and started singing. Musical influences included Lyfe Jennings , Juvenile , 2Pac , Lil Wayne and Soulja Slim . At the age of 14 he published some videos on YouTube and gained a certain reputation as a rising star. Two years later the family system finally collapses. August Alsina becomes homeless and has to drop out of school. After his brother died, he tried to get back on his feet. He got to know his current manager. First he recorded several cover versions , including How to Love by Lil Wayne and Trust Issues by Drake . Together with DJ Scream , he finally released the mixtape The Product followed by The Product II by DJ Drama . The two mixtapes caught the attention of Def Jam, who signed the young artist.

The Extended Play Downtown: Life Under the Gun followed . The single I Luv This Shit starring Trinidad James became his first major hit and peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 . On April 15, 2014, his debut album Testimony was released , which reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 . In 2014 he was nominated for the BET Awards in four categories . He won the BET Award in the “Best New Artist” category and the “Coca-Cola Viewers' Choice Award” for I Luv This Shit .
