Jeruzalem is a village in northeastern Slovenia . It has 31 inhabitants (2016) and its height above sea level is 341 m.

Jeruzalem is located nine kilometers north of the town of Ormož in the historical region of Styria ( Štajerska ) . The place was founded in the 13th century by German crusaders who returned to Europe from the Holy Land .

Vineyards in Jeruzalem

Already at that time, viticulture in the fertile surroundings formed the basis of economic existence, which was steadily expanded because the Habsburg monarchy granted a permit to trade in wine in and around Ljubljana and Maribor. Jeruzalem is therefore located in one of the most famous wine-growing regions in Slovenia on the Slovenian Wine Route.

The spacious landscape is shaped by the vineyards, most of which are family-owned and therefore some are more than 100 years old. Mainly white wine types such as Šipon , Chardonnay , Welschriesling , Gelber Muskateller and Muskat Ottonel are grown and pressed , red wines only play a subordinate role. To boost wine sales, many winemakers have negotiated contracts with travel companies to facilitate wine tasting and shopping. They also rent out a limited number of guest rooms.

A hotel has also settled on the plateau with the pilgrimage church . From an observation tower near the village there is a broad view of the area.

Crusaders had the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows ( Slovene Cerkev Žalostne Matere božje ) built in Jeruzalem between 1652 and 1717 instead of an earlier chapel . The church - located on a hill - was later rebuilt in the Baroque style. It is the landmark of the place. The altarpiece with the Mother of God and the baby Jesus on her lap dates from the late 17th century and is a copy of a painting that the Crusaders are said to have brought from Palestine . The church is surrounded by a spacious church garden and a park.
