action

The six-month Mars mission Aurora 2 is nearing completion. In 19 hours, the eight-person ground crew is to be brought up to the mother ship Aurora to start the journey home to Earth. Under a pretext, the astronaut Petrovic leaves the Tantalus base shortly before sunset to take more soil samples at an excavation site. He drives to the destination with his colleague Harrington, but is buried shortly after the start of the excavation.

The other astronauts at the base have since found out that Petrovic has encountered a bacterial life form. Mission leader Brunel and astronaut Dalby also drive to the excavation site; while Brunel and Harrington drive back to the base, Dalby stays on site overnight. Shortly before Brunel and the other crew members Campbell, Lane and Irwin reach the hole again, Dalby reports that someone has entered their rover. The four found the excavation hole and rover only empty on site, but footprints lead towards the base. When Petrovic and Dalby reach the base, Harrington opens the airlock, but is killed directly by Petrovic, who just like Dalby has mutated into a zombie under the influence of the bacteria , who can detect non-zombies and attacks them immediately.

The scientist Aldrich is initially able to flee from the attackers. When the four in the rover have reached the base again, Brunel is injured by Petrovic with a pickaxe, together with Aldrich they can save themselves to the separate hydroponics. Due to their injuries, Brunel and Harrington are also infected with the bacteria and mutate; no longer being in control of his senses hurt Brunel Irwin's neck. Campbell wants to get back to the main module through a tunnel in order to send an emergency call to the mother ship from there. During the transfer, Harrington destroys the power supply in the main module and pursues the fleeing Campbell into the hydroponics. When Harrington chases Aldrich into a laboratory there, Irwin locks the door, which means certain death for Aldrich. As the remaining Campbell, Irwin and Lane flee to the rover, Lane is injured in the thigh by Dalby with scissors.

You have to change the rover due to lack of energy, leaving Irwin Campbell and the infected Lane behind. With the last of their energy reserves, the two of them are able to escape the advancing attackers, Lane voluntarily leaves the rover overnight to protect Campbell. When he follows her, she kills herself by taking off her hard hat. The arriving lander cannot be warned by Campbell in time, the rescue team is overwhelmed by the invading zombies. On board the lander, Campbell meets the now mutated Irwin again, who activates the start sequence after a fight. Campbell is able to take out Irwin and put Irwin through the airlock into space, but is himself injured in the face. At the end of the film, he drifts in a stable Mars orbit without enough fuel. Should the infection break out in him, he wants to steer towards Mars to burn up in the atmosphere.

criticism
