action

In 1913, a disaster happened in a remote Pennsylvania mine when hard-hearted owner Caleb Carlton had a pit blasted with dynamite to save time. However, the explosion causes the mine to collapse and the miners are buried. Most of the child laborers deployed , however, are buried alive. The charges against Caleb Carlton are subsequently dropped and the mine is closed.

Around eighty years later, after the death of her husband, Karen Tunny and her two daughters move into a remote house near the mine. Karen had left the house to her husband, who died of cancer. When the family arrives at their destination, they find the door covered with blood. Shortly after moving in, 6 year old Emma talks about a new friend named Mary. She is as old as she and lives with other children in the buried mine. One evening near the mine, Karen and Emma meet the hermit Aaron Hanks. Emma notices that the door is also stained with blood. The hermit warns both of them not to leave the house at night and go into the forest.

A few days later, Karen Tunny meets the building contractor William Carlton, the last descendant of Caleb Carlton, in the neighboring village, who wants to turn Carlton and the surrounding area into a holiday paradise for skiers. William Carlton no longer attaches great importance to the crime of his great-grandfather, but dismisses it as a legend. For Karen Tunny, the new surroundings will become more and more eerie over the next few days. Little Emma is increasingly talking about her encounters with the mysterious Mary and they both even exchange their dolls after Mary confessed to the 6-year-old that her room was once her own. Karen begins to investigate and in the house she finds clues about the mining accident and the fact that two of the children buried were distantly related to their deceased husband. One of these children was a 6 year old girl named Mary Tunny who had an older brother named Carl. Karen is slowly beginning to understand the connections. She realizes that the children do not rest in peace, but rise up as carnivorous zombies and hunt down anyone they come across in the forest. Karen now understands Emma's remark that the children would not eat her.

One evening the undead children kill 15-year-old Sarah Tunny's friends in the forest and so Karen decides to leave the house and the area with her daughters as soon as possible. To her horror, however, she discovers that daughter Emma has disappeared without a trace. Karen and Sarah arrive at the mine in a joint search for Emma. There they meet the undead children. On the run from them, both meet William Carlton, who refuses to take them both in his car. So they both finally end up in Aaron Hanks' house, where they will later be joined by William Carlton. The hermit tells them that the children are out for revenge on Caleb Carlton's bloodline. So only the death of their last living relative could give them and their lost souls peace. The only people protected from them are blood relatives, including Hanks and the Tunneys. For this reason, Hanks tried to use his blood to protect his fellow men from them.

The zombies surround Hanks' farm, put Carlton in the barn and kill him. To their delight, Karen and Sarah find Emma unharmed among the children. Emma confesses to her mother that she only wanted to play with Mary. But after William Carlton's death, Mary and her friends would never again want to kill or harm anyone. Days later, the Tunnys leave their house but do not sell it. Rather, the house should offer the now avenged children a final refuge. Aaron Hanks had meanwhile boarded the windows and promised Karen Tunny that he would look after the undead children. When the Tunnys leave Carlton, there is a flashback through the former Tunny house. The camera stops in front of Emma's room and you can see Mary sitting on Emma's bed. There the undead girl is playing with the new doll. Mary's older brother Carl appears and closes the door.
