Chernobyl Diaries is an American low-budget - Horror by Bradley Parker from the year 2012 .

action

The young Americans Chris, his girlfriend Natalie and Amanda are on a trip to Europe. Together with Chris' brother Paul (who lives as an exchange student in Kiev ) and the backpackers Zoe and Michael, they set off in a minibus against all warnings to the ghost town of Pripyat in the Chernobyl exclusion zone under the guidance of “Extreme Tour” guide Juri .

At first, soldiers prevented the group from entering the cordoned-off area, allegedly maintenance work is taking place in the evacuated area; according to Juri, it is very unusual for him not to have been informed about this suspension beforehand. Without further ado, he takes the detour via an abandoned driveway and secretly arrives with the tourists in Pripyat. The workers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and their families lived there until 1986 . Under the guidance of Juri, the tourists explore the abandoned buildings, making it clear that Yuri apparently knows more about life in the supposedly abandoned city than he says. He points out several times that they are under no circumstances allowed to be in the empty buildings and streets after dark, and justifies this with the wild animals, especially herds of feral dogs, that roam the city; in fact, a bear surprises the group in an abandoned house. However, Juri removes the remains of an extinguished campfire, unnoticed by the tourists. His companions also see a human figure in one of the photos taken at the window of an abandoned building, but ultimately believe it must have been a mistake, since the city has been evacuated and lies within a strictly controlled restricted area. Only later does Paul tell of rumors that he found unbelievable: According to them, the city is not really deserted.

After the tourists were unable to leave their tour bus in the evening due to severed ignition cables, Yuri armed with a pistol and went to the next checkpoint to get help, but was killed by unidentifiable beings. Tourists have to spend the night in the city and are hunted and killed one by one by mutant ex-city residents and strange creatures. Your attempts to remove ignition cables from parked vehicles in order to be able to use the bus again, or to get to the next checkpoint on foot, fail. The last of them, Amanda and Paul, escape, rushed by the mutant city dwellers, through an underground passage into the interior of the destroyed nuclear power plant. Already damaged by the radioactive rays, they are found by a military patrol, who initially mistake them for city dwellers who have escaped from a prison and shoots Paul. Amanda, the last survivor, is apparently taken to a special "hospital". She is told that she has been to the reactor and will now be taken to a doctor. She is asked if anyone else knows that she and her friends are here. She is locked in a cell in complete darkness and suddenly attacked by mutant residents.

criticism

“Oren Peli, who landed a low budget hit with Paranormal Activity and launched a flourishing franchise, lets tourists experience the sheer horror of Chernobyl in his new production. Again he relies on the raw found footage look and a young, fresh team in front of and behind the camera and relies on shock effects and a threatening atmosphere. "

“Scary atmosphere in a radioactive ghost town. The film delivers that grippingly in the first half, but in the second half the story is drowned in blackness. "
