Stormbreaker is the title of an agent film produced in the summer of 2005, the script of which adapted the novel Stormbreaker from the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz .

action

Alex Rider is a fourteen year old normal kid, apart from the fact that his uncle Ian has always made sure that he is not only very physically fit but also speaks different languages fluently. Alex never thought about it too much, just took it as his luck that Ian took him in after his parents passed away. Since Alex's uncle is often on business trips, an American woman named Jack takes care of the house, and Alex is very fond of her.

She is also there for Alex when the news came one night that Ian had died in a car accident. Alex is very sad, but cannot imagine that a truck should be responsible for the death of his very cautious uncle. That's why he goes in search of the truth. However, this seems to displease some people and he puts himself in danger when he discovers Ian's car in the junkyard. This was obviously not involved in an accident, but in a shootout, because it is covered with bullet holes. In addition, Ian's study is cleared out while Alex says goodbye at the funeral. He was not allowed to enter that study even in the presence of his uncle.

At least now it is clear to him that by no means everything is going well. However, before he can continue searching for the truth on his own initiative, Alex is invited for an interview by the bank where his uncle was employed. Now he learns the truth: his uncle was not a banker, but a secret agent, on the way for London's MI6 and was killed while on assignment. Alex should now take his place and pursue an explosive case, otherwise Jack would be expelled from the country. Alex is taken by surprise by the events and the blackmail and can do nothing but agree. Hellish training and a dangerous case are waiting for him around the patron Herod Sayle, who works with the diabolical killer Yassen Gregorovich. He finds out that Herod Sayle's people build deadly gases into computers in a factory. Just before the Prime Minister presses the button to start the Stormbreaker, Alex bursts inside and saves the English students from death.

Background information

Over 500 boys were cast to find the actor who plays Alex Rider . Since he is always described in the novels by Anthony Horowitz as a physically very active young person who, among other things, has mastered mountaineering and martial arts, the casting was a challenge that the then 15-year-old Alex Pettyfer was able to successfully claim for himself.

Most of the film was shot in London . But scenes have also been found on the Isle of Man . The budget was £ 25 million, the equivalent of 40 million euros.

The original plan was to film all other novels in the Alex Rider series. Since Stormbreaker fell far short of expectations at the box office (the film only grossed around $ 215,000 on the opening weekend), the production of the second part Gemini Project, originally planned for 2008, was not realized.

Trivia

In the finale of the film there is a scene in which Alex has to prove himself to an Asian with a top hat. This is similar to Goldfinger's servant in the James Bond film of the same name.

Reviews

At Moviesection, Thomas Ays awards four out of five possible stars and says: “Overall, 'Stormbreaker' is a well-rounded affair and a successful implementation of the ingenious book template. Even if some things are very, very different here, the film also offers good spy entertainment a la 'James Bond' compared to the book. ”He also finds words of praise for the cast of the leading roles.

Kino.de writes: “Comparisons with 'Spy Kids' - evaluated in the USA by the Weinsteins via Miramax - are obvious, but 'Stormbreaker' is noticeably older and the action is more modern and mature - not to mention the quality of the cast . "

At Zelluloid.de they judge the film as: “A remarkable film for action fans, which I also really liked, with a brilliant cast and a very pretty Alicia Silverstone! So - worth seeing. "
