Evaton is a township in Sedibeng district in Gauteng province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 132,851 people.

geography

Evaton is located about 35 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg and connects directly to Sebokeng , which is located to the south . Is located further to the southeast which consists of the cities of Vereeniging , Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg formed industrial area, "Vaal Triangle" ( Vaal Triangle ). Meyerton to the east is around 15 kilometers away. The national road N1 touches the place in the west. The Vaal River flows to the south about 20 kilometers away.

history

Evaton was founded in 1904 and served as a township mainly as a place of residence for black Africans . Due to social injustices, there were often violent clashes between security forces and the residents, especially in 1984 and 1985. A detailed description of the situation in the townships of Evaton and Sebokeng at that time was written by the priest Patrick Noonan. After the end of apartheid , the situation calmed down to a large extent. In May 2013, however, youths rioted in Evaton and Sebokeng, blocked streets and looted shops, resulting in numerous arrests.

In fiscal 2004/2005, the government started an urban renewal program to improve quality of life under the name Evaton Renewal Project .

Demographic data

The population of 143,157 people determined in 2001 was made up as follows: 99.49% black African , 0.05% white , 0.45% colored and 0.01% Asian . The main language at this time was Sesotho with 60.14%, followed by isiZulu with 21.61%, isiXhosa with 9.16%, Setswana with 3.69%, Sepedi with 1.27%, Afrikaans with 0.55%, English with 0.14% and other languages ​​with 3.44%.
