Albert Hoffmann (lawyer)

Albertus Jacobus Hoffmann (born May 18, 1955 in Vanderbijlpark , South Africa ) is a South African lawyer and has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea since 2005 .

Life

Hoffmann completed his law studies at the University of Johannesburg in 1987. In 1990 he took part in the Masters program at the University of Pretoria and in 2003 in the UNITAR program at Columbia University .

From 1974 to 1975 he worked at the Magistrate's Court of Johannesburg , then was a court reporter and was admitted to the South African Supreme Court in 1983 . After Hoffmann started working in the South African Foreign Ministry in 1983, he initially worked there as a consultant and then switched to the Permanent Mission of his country to the United Nations in 1999 .

Hoffmann was involved in the drafting of several international agreements, including the Antarctic Treaty and the Rome Statute .

Since October 1st, 2005 he has been a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . From October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2014, he was Vice President. After his re-election, his term as judge runs until September 30, 2023.
