Simon Ettlin

Simon Ettlin (also Josef Simon Etlin , born January 9, 1818 in Sarnen ; † May 7, 1871 ibid) was a Swiss politician ( Catholic Conservative ), doctor , architect , painter and drawing teacher . He was National Councilor and Mayor of the Canton of Obwalden .

Life

Ettlin was the son of Josef Ignaz, grocer, and Anna Marie Josefa geb. Wallimann. From 1831 to 1832 he attended the Sarnen Latin School and from 1833 to 1835 the Muri Abbey School. This was followed by a visit to the Jesuit College in Freiburg from 1836 to 1838. Finally, from 1838 to 1842, he completed a medical degree in Zurich , Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich . med. completed.

Ettlin was married to Josephine Christen von Stans . His daughter Rosalia Ettlin married the politician Adalbert Wirz in 1879 .

Ettlin practiced as a doctor in Sarnen from 1843 to 1871. In addition, from 1844 to 1868 he was a drawing teacher at the college and an architect of private and public buildings. Among other things, he designed the Villa Landenberg, the Konvikt and Pensionat Niklaus von Flüe , the hospital with penal institution and the orphanage in Sarnen in the style of bourgeois classicism .

Ettlin founded Obwalden's first newspaper in 1870 with the Obwalden Volksfreund . He was also the chief editor of the newspaper. He wrote economic, ethical and health policy publications.

Political offices

From 1849 Ettlin was Obwalden councilor, which he presided over in 1870/1871. From 1853 to 1871 he was a member of the government, there until 1858 Landsäckelmeister and between 1861 and 1871 five times Landammann . In the period from 1862 to 1871 he was mayor of Sarnen for five years and from 1869 to 1871 mayor of the community.
