Monsignor Lorenz Rogger (born December 1, 1878 in Sursee , † April 16, 1954 in Beromünster ) was a Swiss Catholic clergyman and educator .

Life

Lorenz Rogger was born as the son of Josef Karl Rogger, farmer and councilor and his wife Marie, born. Süsslin, born on the Kotten farm near Sursee.

He received his first lessons in the comprehensive school Dogelzwil near Oberkirch , from the teacher Michael Achermann, the father of the famous folk writer Franz Heinrich Achermann (1881-1946). He then attended the Latin school in Sursee and the Sarnen college .

From 1900 to 1904 he studied theology at the University of Lucerne and pedagogical science at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he also heard the sermons of the pastor poet Heinrich Hansjakob . Finally he studied literature and art history at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland ; Here he was in the period from 1903 to 1904 in the central president of the Swiss Student Association .

In 1905 he was given by Bishop Leonhard Haas the priesthood in Lucerne . Before he became professor of history, German and French at the teachers' seminar in Hitzkirch in 1906 , he still worked at the Aargau district school in Frick . From 1911 to 1946 he was also the director of the seminar and teacher for religion, education and psychology; During this time, in 1937 , he succeeded in modernizing the teaching building, the former Teutonic Knight Coming , and extending the seminar training to five years and dividing it into a lower and upper seminar; in this task he found helpful support from the Council of States Gotthard Egli .

Propstei Stift Beromünster

From 1918 to 1937 he was Vice President of the Catholic Teachers Association.

In 1936 he was appointed papal house prelate , in 1947 apostolic protonotary and in 1946 provost of the Beromünster monastery ; Through his initiative and with the help of the Swiss Confederation, the Beromünster Propstei was renovated and placed under monument protection.

Writing

Until 1932 he was co-editor of the club magazine Schweizer Schule . As an educational writer, he wrote, among other things, the textbook of the Catholic religion for high schools and secondary schools, teacher and teacher seminars , in which he referred, in contrast to the existing textbooks, which focused on the strictness of dogma and morality, the realities of life of the students and stimulated theirs Self-employment; At the beginning of his religious instruction at the seminary the Oldenburg textbook of the Catholic religion was still used, which was later replaced by Martin Waldeck's manual of Catholic religious instruction . These textbooks were learning and repetition books in the form of the catechism ; they dealt with the religious subject matter in question and answer and in a very systematic way. In the opinion of most Catholic methodologists, the religious textbook was the methodologically most backward of all middle school textbooks. Lorenz Rogger created a new textbook in which the learner, through the guidance of the religion teacher, acquired his knowledge.

Honors

  • At the end of his seventieth year, students and friends dedicated the book Catholic Education Tasks to him : Festschrift Msgr. Lorenz Rogger on his 70th birthday presented by friends and students , for which Federal Councilor Philipp Etter wrote the foreword .
