Franz Heinrich Achermann (born July 1, 1881 in St. Erhard; † April 18, 1946 in Kriens ) was a Swiss clergyman and author of books for young people .

Life

Achermann was the son of the elementary school teacher Michael Achermann and his wife Maria Josefa (née Habermacher). He spent his childhood in Oberkirch . He received his education at the middle school in Sursee . This was followed by Catholic theology studies in Sarnen , Lucerne and Innsbruck . He was ordained a priest on July 12, 1908 in Lucerne . In the same year he took up a position as vicar in Schaffhausen , where he stayed until 1913. From 1913 to 1920 he was vicar in Oberdorf , Canton Solothurn . During this time he began researching the prehistoric caves in the Jura. He was so fascinated by it that he later incorporated his findings into a series of stories and novels from the “wilderness” of the Stone Age and Ice Age. The first publications of books for young people date from this time. In 1920 he moved to Basel , where he worked as vicar at St. Joseph's Church in Basel until 1930. From 1930, until his death in 1946, he worked as a pastor's helper in Kriens .

He was the author of a whole series of popular novels that made him one of the most widely read Swiss authors of young books. In addition to his novels from his Swiss homeland, it was above all his books about the early days of mankind and his historical novels on European history that established his fame. In addition, he wrote a number of science fiction, student stories, crime novels and plays. The success of his works made him known throughout the German-speaking area. In Germany he was often referred to as the Swiss Karl May . His Catholic books are now considered exciting with a penchant for kitsch . Since the late 1970s, his books have been increasingly reprinted in edited form.
