Grosshaus Hofmatt

The Grosshaus Hofmatt is a cultural monument in Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland . The building was built in 1643 by Mayor Johann Imfeld II. During this time, the wall painting in the panorama room was made. The panorama of Obwalden is shown, the artist is unknown.

The house was inhabited by the builder until 1709 and later by his son. Then it was rented to Johann Baptist Dillier , known as the "Lord of the Seminar", for ten years . He used the building for a private boys' seminar, from which the Sarnen College developed. In the middle of the 18th century the brothers Franz Ignaz Schmid , sculptor, and Carl Anton Schmid , painter, lived in Hofmatt as tenants. Works by both artists can still be seen in the churches of Sachseln and Sarnen. They also created the wall paintings on the upper floors of the house.

The building is listed and is on the list of objects worthy of protection for 2006 .
