Robert D. Garbade

Robert Dietrich Garbade (* 28. June 1918 in New York ; † 5. April 1983 in Zurich ) was the first cameraman of Swiss television , scriptwriter and director of documentaries and feature films .

Career

Robert D. Garbade was a son of the banker Theodore Garbade and Aida Ambrosia Heydrichs, a daughter of the Cuban entrepreneur Emilio Heydrich . After his youth in New York, San Sebastián and Lucerne, he studied at the German Film School in Munich. Back in Switzerland, he began his career as a cameraman and was on the set of several Swiss films, including Weyherhuss (Das Haus des Teiches) , 1940, by R. Guggenheim, S'Margritli und Soldat (Marguerite and soldiers) , 1940/1941 , ruled by A. Kern or Matteo (Murder in Asylum) , 1946/47, by Leopold Lindtberg . In the feature film The subscribed by Fred Zinnemann he worked as a cameraman for Emil Berna .

He was the cameraman for numerous documentaries, including the documentary Die Olympiaden in Sankt Moritz 1948 and Entendons-nous, tout ira mieux (1949), and first cameraman on Swiss television (1950). In the 1950s, travel programs and reports from distant countries were among the most popular topics on Swiss television. Various series dealt with the subject, and so Garbade reported in the first broadcast with Alphons Matt from a trip to Montenegro and the Dalmatian coast. Garbade directed nine episodes of Come To Canada (1957). In a 13-part program about the war he filmed The Threat, the Shock, the Assertion of a Small State , 1970–1974.

Private life

Garbade lived in Zurich, was the father of Dieter Garbade and his first marriage was to the Basel banker's daughter Madeleine Ehinger (1923–2005). He later married Thea Lacina, who accompanied him until his death in 1983. He found his final resting place in the Realp cemetery in Zurich.
