Alfred Koelz

Alfred Kölz (born May 15, 1944 in Solothurn ; † May 29, 2003 ) was a Swiss legal scholar .

Kölz passed his Matura at the Solothurn Cantonal School and then began studying civil engineering at the ETH Zurich . After two semesters, however, he switched to law studies, which he completed at the Universities of Zurich and Bern . In 1973 he was with a thesis on "Process principles in the Swiss Administrative Law" doctorate ; In 1978 his habilitation followed with a thesis on the Zurich Administrative Law Care Act. The following year, Kölz was appointed professor for constitutional law , administrative law and constitutional history at the law faculty of the University of Zurich; from 1996 to 1998 he was their dean .

In addition to his work on constitutional and administrative law, Kölz was also known for his recent Swiss constitutional history, the first volume of which appeared in 1992. In addition, around 1984 he and Jörg Paul Müller presented a draft for a new Swiss federal constitution. Kölz was also one of the initiators of the new Zurich cantonal constitution. In his private life he was also committed to popular rights and environmental protection.

In May 2003, Kölz died of a tumor; the second volume of his Modern Swiss Constitutional History was posthumously completed and published by staff and a few colleagues.

He found his final resting place in the Rehalp cemetery in Zurich .
