Setup date 1987

The nature reserve Kahle Pön near Usseln with a size of 35.04  ha is located south of Usseln in the municipality of Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated in 1987 because of its importance for botany. The NSG is identical to the FFH area Kahle Pön near Usseln (DE 4718-302). The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park . The southern border lies on the state border of Hesse . Borders in the southwest corner of the NSG North Rhine-Westphalia , the nature reserve Kahle Pön on. The NSG is spatially and functionally related to other high heaths in the Upland and in North Rhine-Westphalia. Like the other high heaths in the area, the NSG has a northern Atlantic vegetation character.

Area description

The Kahle Pön was free of trees until the 1920s and was used by shepherds as pasture for cattle . The Hochheide had previously developed through centuries of cattle grazing and pest management from former beech forests. At the beginning of the 1950s, shepherds stopped grazing and some areas were reforested with spruce. In other NSG areas, spruce trees settled due to the arrival of seeds. This was later sawn down partly as part of maintenance measures. Since 1987 the grassland areas in the NSG have been grazed by the Bigger Josefsheim of the Josefs Society with Heidschnucken , a special breed of sheep from the Lüneburg Heath , and goats. The earlier use of pests is partly imitated by the use of pest machines developed for this purpose. Heather species such as common heather ( Calluna vulgaris ) can germinate on the plagued raw soil areas .

The habitat type mountain or high heather takes up about half of the NSG area. Although it is relatively poor in species, it contains a number of interesting species such as the dwarf shrubs bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus ) and lingonberry ( V. vitis-idaea ), club moss ( Lycopodium clavatum ) and arnica ( Arnica montana ). In terms of plant sociology, it is a cranberry-heather society. On the other half of the NSG there are grassland areas, which are mostly used very intensively. The earlier bristle grass lawns, as an indicator of earlier grazing, can only be found in small areas. In the southwest of the area there is a small low moor complex with brown sedge lawn, peat moss blankets and willow bushes. Species such as narrow-leaved cottongrass ( Eriophorum angustifolium ), marsh fireweed ( Epilobium palustre ), yellow sedge ( Carex flava ), brown sedge ( C. nigra ) and small valerian ( Valeriana dioica ) are found here.

Wildlife

In 2002, 46 breeding bird species were identified in the NSG. Beside one breeding pair Shrike and Red-backed Shrike 12 were Baumpieper - and 6 Meadow Pipit found -Reviere. 68 species of butterflies were found. 16 types of beetles were detected. The endangered short-winged bite insect was identified among the eight species of locust .

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated a nature reserve because of its importance for botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
