The Osterkopf nature reserve near Usseln with a size of 35.65  hectares is located north of Usseln in the municipality of Willingen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district . The nature reserve (NSG) was designated by the administrative district of Kassel in 1982 because of its importance for botany. The NSG is identical to the FFH area Osterkopf Pön near Usseln (DE-4718-301). The NSG is located within the Diemelsee Nature Park . The NSG is spatially and functionally related to other high heaths in the Upland and in North Rhine-Westphalia. Like the other high heaths in the area, the NSG has a northern Atlantic vegetation character.

Area description

The NSG is the hilltop of the Osterkopf with its high heather and adjacent mountain meadows and grass lawn.

Protection purpose

According to the nature reserve designation, the area was designated a nature reserve because of its importance for botany. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
