The Sensée is a river in the northern French region of Hauts-de-France . It crosses the Pas-de-Calais and Nord departments .
geography
It has its source in the municipality of Saint-Léger , where it drains north-west. At Lécluse it reaches a marshland with a multitude of lakes and ponds. South of Arleux , it crosses the mouth of the Canal du Nord and after a few kilometers reaches the Canal de la Sensée , which it not only gives its name to, but also supplies it with water. Due to the lake-rich environment, it does not follow the canal that was straightened for shipping, but jumps off to the right and left of it. It finally flows into the canalized Scheldt after 47 kilometers at Bouchain as a left tributary .
shipping
The river itself is not navigable. But that was in his valley shipping canal Canal de la Sensée built, the part now of commercial shipping route Dunkirk-Scheldt and of vessels and pushed convoys can be driven with a load capacity up to 3000 tons. This shipping route continues to the east on the canalized Scheldt. At Arleux, the navigable Canal du Nord also joins the Canal de la Sensée from the south.
