Hamel is about nine kilometers south of Douai on the Sensée . Hamel is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Estrées in the north, Arleux in the south and east, Écourt-Saint-Quentin in the south and south-west, Lécluse in the west and Tortequesne in the west and north-west.
