Waziers is a French municipality with 7452 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Douai and the canton of Sin-le-Noble .
geography
The municipality is surrounded to the north, west and south by Douai . To the east and south is the commune of Sin-le-Noble .
The A21 autoroute and the former National Route 17 run through the municipality .
history
Waziers first appeared in the documents in the 13th century. The municipality has been settled since the 3rd century AD. Historically, a tradition can be traced back to the Gallo-Roman era. With the mining of coal in the coal basin in northern France, numerous immigrants from Westphalia and Poland came here. Even today there is a Polish minority in the village. With the decline of mining in the second half of the 20th century, the population also fell.
