Orchies ( Dutch Oorschie ) is a French commune in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Douai and is the main town (chef-lieu) of the canton of Orchies .

With 8,828 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Orchies is the largest municipality in the canton.

geography

Orchies is 26 kilometers from Lille , 30 kilometers from Valenciennes and eight kilometers from the border with Belgium .

Orchies neighboring communities are Nomain in the north, Landas in the east, Beuvry-la-Forêt in the southeast, Bouvignies in the south, Coutiches in the southwest and Auchy-lez-Orchies in the west.

history

In 1297 the city was conquered by Philip IV . 1305 was the official annexation to France . Nevertheless, the city was returned to the County of Flanders in 1370 . 1477 it was by Louis XI. looted. In 1668 it was annexed to France again. During the French Revolution , the city changed hands several times. In 1914 the city was completely destroyed.

Leroux's headquarters are in Orchies . This 150 year old company is the market leader in the manufacture and sale of common chicory products , also known as chicory. So z. B. Coffee substitutes similar to Caro coffee from Germany.
