Guesnain is a French municipality with 4677 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Douai and the Canton of Aniche .
geography
Guesnain is about four kilometers southeast of Douai . Guesnain is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Dechy in the north and west, Montigny-en-Ostrevent in the northeast, Loffre in the east, Lewarde in the southeast and Roucourt in the south.
Several bus lines of the company évéole (Transport du Douasis) and the former Route nationale 45 (today's Départementstrasse 645) open up the municipality.
history
Graves from the Merovingian era were found near today's church. The place is later mentioned for the first time in the books of Maubeuge Abbey.
The community has a mining tradition. Coal has been mined here since 1865, particularly in the Saint-René colliery. In 1953 the mine was closed; In the 1960s, operations were completely stopped. Since 2012 the area has been part of the Northern French Coal Basin World Heritage Site .
