Molefi Sefularo

Molefi Sefularo (born July 9, 1957 in Potchefstroom , † April 5, 2010 in Pretoria ) was a South African politician .

Life

Sefularo was born the son of Kenosi Solomon Sefularo and Masabata Martha Sefularo, née Motsumi, in the South African Northwest Province , in the historic Transvaal Province , about 120 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg .

Sefularo studied medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand . There he earned a Diploma in Public Health , a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and a Diploma in Health Service Management . At the Medical University of Southern Africa ( MEDUNSA ), today's University of Limpopo , he completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB). He then worked as a general practitioner . He also obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Cape Town .

He was a founding member of the Azanian Students Organization in 1979 and was elected its secretary in 1981. From 1981 to 1984 he was President of the Students Representatives Council at the Medical University of Southern Africa. In 1983 he joined the United Democratic Front (UDF) and played an active role in the fight against the South African installed and, after an attempted coup , only with the support of the South African military ruling president of Bophuthatswana , Lucas Mangope .

Sefularo was Deputy Superintendent from the early 1980s and then from 1986 to 1991 Senior Medical Officer at Thusong Hospital in the former South African homeland Bophuthatswana. From 1992 to 1993 he was the coordinator of the National Progressive PHC Network . From 1993 to 1994 he worked as a lecturer and lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1993 he was a member of the Health Committee of the ANC in Gauteng Province and in 1994 he was a member of the Health Desk of the ANC in the Western Transvaal Region in the Province of Klerksdorp .

In 1994, Sefularo was appointed a member of the Executive Council of the Northwest Province and has since been a member of the provincial government. As MEC for Health, he was responsible for the health sector there. In 1999 he was re-elected to this office for a further five years. He held this office until 2004.

In 2004 Sefularo became a member of the South African National Assembly and Whip . He was a member of various parliamentary committees, including the committees on trade and industry , transport , foreign policy and health . He was particularly committed to the fight against the immunodeficiency disease AIDS and was part of the group of parliamentarians who had drawn up the new government's strategic plan for HIV / AIDS 2007–2011 in the fight against AIDS. Sefularo was also a member of the Provincial Executive Committee of the African National Congress.

On 25 September 2008 Sefularo was appointed deputy minister of health ( Deputy Health Minister appointed) of South Africa, after the post since the resignation of his predecessor, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge , had been vacant since 8 August, 2007. He has held this office since May 2009 under the government of President Jacob Zuma . Sefularo died in a car accident on the N4 National Road near Pretoria in April 2010 .

Sefularo had been married to Kgomotso Kgoathe since October 19, 1989.
