Sigrid Doris Peyerimhoff (born January 12, 1937 in Rottweil ) is a German theoretical chemist .

Live and act

Sigrid Peyerimhoff passed her Abitur in 1956, then studied physics at the University of Gießen and graduated in 1961 with a diploma thesis with Wilhelm Hanle . In 1963 she was promoted to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . She then did several research stays in the USA , for example at the University of Chicago , the University of Washington and Princeton University .

After returning to Germany, she completed her habilitation at the University of Gießen in 1967 . From 1970 she was Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Mainz and from 1972 at the University of Bonn , where she headed the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry. In 2002 she retired .

In 1987 Sigrid Peyerimhoff was a founding member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin . From 1990 to 1996 she was Vice President of the German Research Foundation . In 1992 she became a Fellow of the American Physical Society and in 1998 a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . It is also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) , a member of the Academia Europaea since 1988 and a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1990 .

She has been a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science (IAQMS) since 1986 , of which she was President from 2006 to 2009.

Sigrid Peyerimhoff lives in the Bonn district of Ippendorf .

Scientific work

Sigrid Peyerimhoff made important contributions to ab initio methods in quantum chemistry , in particular the ab initio calculation of electron correlation and the further development of the Hartree-Fock method for excited states . Their work also created opportunities to describe environmentally relevant processes in the earth's atmosphere - especially in connection with the ozone molecule .
