Live and act

After completing her doctorate in Berlin in 1940 with Wilhelm Pinder on the ornamentation of the Rhenish goldsmith's art in the Staufer era , she was initially a scholarship holder at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich from 1949 to 1954 , then until her retirement in 1980 she was a research assistant at the institute. Here she was co-editor of the art chronicle from 1954 to 1970 . In 1966 she became a lecturer at the University of Munich , and in 1969 she was appointed honorary professor there. From 1976 to 1982 she was visiting professor at Columbia University in New York , 1975 at Harvard , 1966 and 1971 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and 1983 at Oxford All Souls College .

Medieval book art was the focus of her research. Here she continued in particular the work The Carolingian miniatures founded by Wilhelm Koehler in 1930 , which was completed in 2013 with the eighth volume. She worked with Percy Ernst Schramm and Hermann Fillitz on the monuments of German kings and emperors , the first volume of which was published in 1962. The second volume followed in 1978, while the first came out again in a second edition in 1981.
