With renewed murder plans, all heaps are in danger and have to flee. On the dangerous journey from Marcia and the Heaps to Aunt Zelda in the Marram Marshes , they take boy 412 from the young army with them. Under the guidance of Marcia, he discovers his enormous magical powers and finds the magic ring of Hotep-Ra . When Marcia is captured by the black magician DomDaniel and the top guard, Jenna and boy 412 free her with the help of a mighty dragon boat . At the end of the book, boy 412 turns out to be the missing Septimus Heap, who came to the young army through a mix-up. He had not died, but was kidnapped because DomDaniel wanted to secure the magical power of the seventh son of a seventh son . DomDaniel is defeated in the end and the castle is back under control of the good side.

Detailed description of the plot

Silas Heap finds a child in the snow that he takes home. On the way, the extraordinary sorceress Marcia Overstrand impresses on him to take good care of the child, but not to tell anyone where he got it from. At home, the wet nurse is taking away his newborn son Septimus, because he seems dead. The foundling takes the place of Septimus and is called Jenna.

Ten years later, the ghost Alther Mella learns that the Supreme Guardian, who has taken control of the city and discriminates against the wizards, has found out about Jenna and wants to kill her. Marcia then reveals to Heaps that Jenna is a princess and was rescued by her and Alther ten years ago in an assassination attempt, in which Alther died. Therefore they all have to flee together.

Marcia smuggles Jenna into the safe wizard's tower and saves the life of boy 412 from the young army. Then Silas and his son Nicko Heap appear with dog Maxie, but leave the door open. This gives an assassin a chance to penetrate, but Marcia can stop him. This allows the six to escape into a rubbish chute and outside.

On the run, with the help of Sally Mullin and Marcias magic, they manage to escape the hunter and to flee to Aunt Zelda, while Sarah and the other Heaps are with Galen in the forest.

Then the great cold sets in, which protects them from attacks. Marcia discovers the enormous magical powers of boy 412, who identifies more and more with the wizarding side and finds the ring of Hotep-Ra. Silas travels to the castle to get an amulet for Marcia.

When Silas does not return, Marcia falls for a fake message from the Supreme Guard, who asks her as "Silas" for help, and is imprisoned. Shortly afterwards the great cold passes and the hunter attacks Aunt Zelda's hut with DomDaniel's apprentice named Septimus Heap, but is defeated by her.

Thereupon the black magician DomDaniel, who has taken control of the castle, approaches with his battleship "Retribution", on which Marcia is captured. Meanwhile, Jenna and boy 412 discover the old dragon boat of Hotep-Ra. Because this has been associated with the queens for centuries according to old tradition, it can be activated by Jenna and boy 412, who owns the ring of Hotep-Ra.

Jenna, Nicko and boy 412 pull the dragon boat against the "retaliation" and defeat them. During the attack, Marcia is also able to free herself. After returning victoriously to Aunt Zelda's hut, DomDaniel tries one last time to kill Marcia by slipping into the body of his apprentice. However, she can expose him in time and sinks his body in the river.

Finally, Marcia Junge takes on 412 as an apprentice. Shortly afterwards, Zelda uses the magic of the moon to reveal boy 412 as Septimus Heap, the seventh son believed to be dead; DomDaniel had wanted Septimus Heap as an apprentice because he was the seventh son of a seventh son; H. would be endowed with great magical abilities; So DomDaniel staged Septimus' death and had him kidnapped by the nurse; but through a mix-up, Septimus got into the young army. In his place, the nurse's son, whose real name is Merrin Meridith, became DomDaniel's apprentice.
