3. Physic

The antagonist of volume three, Physic (March 2007), is the 500-year-old ghost of Queen Etheldredda , who was accidentally freed from Silas Heap. She has Septimus captured by her immortal son Marcellus Pye , who sends Septimus back 500 years in time. There Septimus becomes the apprentice of the young Marcellus Pye, who is a brilliant alchemist. For him, Septimus, the seventh of a seventh, is supposed to expand the immortality potion to include eternal youth. Jenna, Nicko, and the northern trader Snorri also travel in the past to bring Septimus back.

However, the living Etheldredda drinks the unfinished elixir. Marcellus then lets Septimus and Jenna go. However, Nicko and Snorri are late and are left with the past. In the present, Septimus brews the youth elixir for Marcellus as a thank you and uses his alchemical knowledge to fight an epidemic caused by Etheldredda. Marcia destroys Etheldredda's ghost when she tries to kill Jenna.

4. Quest

The fourth volume Queste (April 2008) describes the journey to the Foryx House , where all times meet. Jenna and Septimus want to bring Nicko and Snorri back to their time there.

At the same time, Septimus has to complete a deadly quest, from which many died before, and which was threaded by the spirit Tertius Fume . Jenna and Septimus manage to reach the Foryx House with the help of Septimus friend Beetle and others, which also turns out to be Septimus Queste's goal.

There, Septimus meets the first Extraordinary Magician Hotep-Ra, who solves the riddle of the quest. But since the five cannot return from the Foryx House, she frees Marcia together with fire-breathing and brings everyone back to their correct time.

5. Syren

The fifth book in the series was published on September 29, 2009 in the USA. The German version was published on August 16, 2010.

The point is that Septimus wants to pick up his friends in an old fishing hut with his kite. The dragon crashes on the way back over a lonely island on which a siren is up to mischief. The Cerys , Jenna's father's ship, is lured by the siren and runs aground. On board the Cerys there are genie warriors who are supposed to subvert the castle via a secret ice tunnel. The plan almost succeeds, but Septimus' own Djinn, which he got from Aunt Zelda, can freeze her. The genie also overpowers the siren and Septimus and his friends can drive back to the castle, where they are met by Marcia.

6. Darke

Darke , the sixth volume in the series, was published in German on September 29, 2011. It is about the Dark Week Septimus', a phase in the teaching of every exceptional apprentice.

Meanwhile, Merrin Meredith has set up a dark field in the palace, which Jenna is very worried about, why she asks Beetle for help. This recognizes the situation and alerts Marcia and the magicians of the castle erect a protective wall around the palace so that the dark field does not spread any further. But Merrin's ghosts manage to break through it and the dark field spreads over the whole castle, except for the protected wizard's tower, and all unprotected residents fall into a kind of trance. Septimus tries to save Alther Mella's ghost, whom Marcia has accidentally banished to the dark halls, and goes to this dark magic place. He can free Alther, but his hands are tied too.

Merrin Meredith has now created a terrible dark dragon, but is defeated by Septimus on fire-breathing. Septimus steals the paired secret formulas from Merrin , with which Marcia, with the help of Simon Heap , with whom his siblings have reconciled, can speak the reversal spell , just as the protective wall of the wizard's tower is breached. The castle is now saved and freed from the dark field.

7. Fyre

The final seventh volume was published on April 16, 2013 in the original English and on September 30, 2013 in German.

After Septimus, Jenna and Beetle are 14 years old, they take on important roles in their magical world: Beetle is chief magician in the manuscript, Princess Jenna is crowned queen, and Septimus fights resolutely against the remains of the dark sphere. To destroy the power of the double-faced ring, he unleashes the magic of all magics: Fyre. Only when he can prove his skills and his loyalty to the Extraordinary Sorceress Marcia Overstrand and the alchemist Marcellus Pye will he become the 777th Extraordinary Magician.

The fantasy world

The story takes place in a fictional medieval world. Maps are printed in each of the volumes showing important places in the world.

The castle

The castle is the series’s main play area. It is located on an island in the river and houses the magician's tower, the palace and the anwanden. Under the ground there are secret ice tunnels that can be entered through hatches in various buildings.

The Wizard's Tower is the abode of the Extraordinary Sorceress Marcia Overstrand, her apprentice Septimus and all common wizards. It was built by Hotep-Ra and is 23 stories high. A golden pyramid adorns its top. Special magical powers emanate from him.

The palace is the residence of the princess and her family. It has many secret rooms like the princess chamber and a secret passage in the Marram Marshes. There is also an allegedly cursed Paion in the palace garden.

The anwanden is a large, intertwined housing unit where most of the castle's residents live.

The surroundings of the castle

The Marram Marshes stretch south of the castle . They are dangerous because they harbor many creatures such as brownlings and pythons. The guardian Zelda Heap, who guarded the old dragon boat here, lives on one of the numerous islands. The Marram Marshes are surrounded in the north by the idiot Ditch and resemble a huge swamp landscape.

The castle forest is northwest and is just as dangerous. The Wendron witches, wolverines and carnivorous trees live here. But some heap sons, shape shifters and the herb woman Galen also live there. Secret paths lead from the forest to other forests and also to the foryx house.

Other places

The Foryx House is a magical building in a snowy forest. It was built by Hotep-Ra and in it the times flow together. It can only be reached via a narrow and long bridge.

Port is a town south of the seaside castle. This is where the big ships land and all kinds of rabble hang around.

The wastelands are a desolate, rocky and hilly area on the northern border. Here DomDaniel built his observatory and Simon Heap planned his vengeance. They are also dangerous, as landworms roam around and eat anything that is not safe at dusk.

Peru and the Fiji Islands are also mentioned as distant countries.

The Siren Islands, the Star Island and the Katzenfels lighthouse lie between the land mass on which the Foryx House is located and that on which the castle and the wastelands stand.
