Andreas Schmidt-Colinet

Andreas Schmidt-Colinet (born July 25, 1945 in Gronau (Leine) ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Andreas Schmidt-Colinet studied classical archeology, prehistory and early history from 1967 to 1974. In 1974 he received his doctorate in Cologne in Classical Archeology with Heinz Kähler on ancient supporting figures . From 1975 to 1980 Schmidt-Colinet worked as an assistant at the University of Frankfurt . In 1975/76 he had a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1980 to 1984 he was a research assistant at the department of the German Archaeological Institute in Damascus . From 1981 he took over the management of the Palmyra project . From 1984 to 1992 he worked as a senior assistant at the University of Bern . In 1990 he completed his habilitation with the contribution of studies on Palmyrenean tomb architecture and its furnishings . From 1992 to 1996, Schmidt-Colinet held visiting professorships in Vienna, Paris, Besançon, Warsaw, Mainz and Neuchâtel. From 2000 to 2010 he taught as Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna, succeeding Friedrich Krinzinger . His successor was Günther Schörner in September 2011 .

Schmidt-Colinet's main research interests include Hellenistic-Roman art and architecture in the Middle East, Nabataean rock architecture, and excavations and research in Palmyra. He is a member of the German Archaeological Association (since 1974), the Mommsen Society (since 1990), a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 1993) and a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (since 1998).
