Reinhold Bichler

Reinhold Bichler (born January 19, 1947 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian ancient historian .

After graduating from high school in his hometown of Innsbruck in 1965, which he passed with distinction, he studied ancient history, history and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck from 1966–74 . Between 1973 and 1974 he worked as a university lecturer at the Institute for Ancient History, and in January 1974 he received his doctorate sub auspiciis with the dissertation “Critical Contributions to the Problem of the Representation of History in School Books” and was appointed university assistant. In 1980 his habilitation followed with the text “Hellenism. History and problems of an epoch concept ”. In 1982 he was appointed full professor of ancient history and comparative history in Innsbruck as the successor to his teacher Franz Hampl . 1991–92 he was vice dean of the humanities faculty. He retired in 2013 .

Bichler is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Austrian Academy of Sciences . He has been married since 1973.

Bichler deals with ancient historiography and ethnography , especially Herodotus , as well as the history of ideas in antiquity, especially with antique utopias and their reception . He is also dedicated to the theory and history of historical science. He is currently working on the second volume of the "History of Ancient Utopia" and on studies on Greek historiography, especially on Ktesias and Berossos .
