Wolfgang Günther (ancient historian)

Wolfgang Günther (* 1940 ) is a German ancient historian and epigraphist .

He studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , passed the first state examination in 1965 and the second state examination in 1969. In 1971 he was in Tübingen because of epigraphic work on the oracle of Apollo in Didyma to Dr. phil. PhD . From August 1, 1973 until his retirement in 2005, he worked as the successor to Wilhelm Kaltenstadler as an Academic Councilor (later Academic Senior Counselor) at the Institute for Ancient History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (which was transferred to the "Department for Ancient History of the Historical Seminary ”). He is a member of the Bavarian Numismatic Society and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

Wolfgang Günther's research focuses on researching the inscriptions of Didyma , Aizanoi and Miletus . He worked on the compilation "Greece - Lexicon of Historic Places" edited by Siegfried Lauffer and on the source collection of historical Greek inscriptions in translation .

Günther is married to the ancient historian Linda-Marie Günther .
