Siegfried Lauffer (born August 4, 1911 in Stuttgart , † April 2, 1986 in Munich ) was a German ancient historian .

Life

After graduating from the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Schöntal-Urach , Lauffer began studying history, classical philology and German in Tübingen. He moved to Berlin, Vienna, in turn, Tübingen and Vienna, where he in 1934 Adolf Wilhelm with a dissertation on The Platonic agriculture received his doctorate. After the state examination in Tübingen in 1935, he worked as a teacher in Württemberg from 1936 to 1946, interrupted, however, by longer leave of absence for research work. He traveled to Greece several times and carried out regional studies , especially in Boiotia , even at the beginning of the German occupation of Greece in World War II. From April 1942 until the end of the war, Lauffer was a medical soldier and during this time was able to do his habilitation at the Berlin University, sponsored by Wilhelm Weber , through Imperium .

In 1945 Lauffer escaped from Soviet captivity and returned to Tübingen, where he worked again as a teacher until 1946, then as a lecturer and lecturer at the university. In 1949 he completed his habilitation from Berlin to Munich and became a private lecturer and (from January 1950) research assistant at the seminar for ancient history there. In the Commission for Ancient History and Epigraphy founded in 1951 , he became a representative of the non-ordinaries. In 1955 Lauffer became an adjunct professor in Munich and in 1963, after he had refused an appointment at the University of Bonn, a scheduled adjunct professor for "Ancient history with special consideration of social and economic history". After the rejection of further calls to Salzburg and Vienna, Lauffer became a full professor in 1967. He retired in 1979, but held regular lectures until shortly before his death in 1986.

Services

The most important topics in Lauffer's research were the geography of ancient Boiotia, especially the Kopaïs region, and ancient economic history (such as the basic monograph on The Mining Slaves of Laureion , the edition of Diocletian's price edict and a project to collect data on prices and wages in the ancient).

He also wrote a repeatedly published outline of ancient history , a brief history of the ancient world and a biography of Alexander the great , as well as school wall maps on ancient times. In television programs in the 1960s and as a tour guide, he also conveyed knowledge of antiquity in a popular form. His biography of Alexander the Great was "excellent because of his [sic] sobriety and because of the precise source and literature evidence for each statement," said Wolfgang Schuller .
