Franz Reber

Franz Xaver von Reber (born November 10, 1834 in Cham ; † September 4, 1919 in Pöcking , Starnberg district ) was a German art historian .

He studied in Munich and Berlin from 1853 to 1856, then went to Rome and completed his habilitation in 1858 at the University of Munich . In 1863 he became associate professor, in 1869 professor of art history and aesthetics at the Polytechnic in Munich, today's Technical University of Munich , and in 1875 director of the State Galleries . In 1881 he was ennobled.

The family residence in Pöcking, built in the style of a Tuscan country villa.

Reber has worked particularly on the art of antiquity and the history of architecture : "The Ruins of Rome and the Campagna" (1863, 2nd ed. 1877); "Vitruvius's ten books on architecture, translated and explained" (1865); “History of Architecture in Antiquity” (1864–67); "Art history of antiquity" (1871), but also about the art of the Middle Ages ("Art history of the Middle Ages", 1885) and modern art history ("History of modern German art from the end of the last century", 3 vols., 1874–76 ; 2nd ed. 1884). Together with Adolf Bayersdorfer, he was the editor of the “Classic Treasure of Pictures” (1888–1890) and the “Classic Treasure of Sculpture” (1896–1900), two collections typical of the time.

In 1887 he was made an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1890 a full member.
