The Yangon region ( Burmese ရန်ကုန်တိုင်းဒေသကြီး , BGN / PCGN : yan-gôndaingdethagyi , Yangon division until 2008 ) is one of the 15 administrative units of Myanmar .
geography
The Yangon region is bordered by the Bago region to the north and east , the Bay of Bengal to the south and the Irrawaddy region to the west . It is located between 16 ° 20 'north and 17 ° 50' north or between 95 ° 45 'east and 96 ° 46' east.
The coconut islands north of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal also belong to this region. The Yangon region is the most developed region of Burma.
population
The population in 1999 was about 5,420,000; the 2014 census determined a population of 7,360,703. The majority of the population is ethnic Bamar . Most of the residents are religiously Buddhists , followed by Muslims and Christians . The majority of the residents live in the region's capital of the same name, the Burmese metropolis of Rangoon (Yangon). With 70% urban population, the Yangon region is by far the most urbanized in the country.
