The Cocos Islands ( Burmese ကိုကိုးကျွန်း kuikui: kywan [ kò.kó.cúɴ ], English Coco Islands ) are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean , which politically belong to Myanmar (Burma).
geography
The Cocos Islands are the northern continuation of belonging to India chain of islands of Andaman , and are from the northern Andaman Islands by the 20 km wide coconut channel ( English Coco Channel delimited). They are located around 300 kilometers south of the Myanmar mainland.
The archipelago consists of the Large Coconut Island (around 10 × 2 kilometers in size) and the Small Coconut Island (around 5 × 1 kilometers in size), separated by the Alexandra Canal , and the small island of Table Island .
Administratively, the islands belong to the Yangon Region , Yangon South District, Cocokyun Township (approximately municipality), Cocokyun Town.
Possession and use
In 1998, the Indian Defense Minister explained that the islands once belonged to India, but that Jawaharlal Nehru gave them to Burma, now Myanmar.
Due to their strategic location, they were leased to the People's Republic of China in 1994 , which operates a military airfield on the islands as well as facilities for radar monitoring and telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance .
Flora and fauna
Numerous green turtles regularly make their nests on the Big Coconut Island . In 2006, a study began for the first time to examine the population over the long term.
